Here’s exactly what I did—and why it worked.
Step 1: Dry Cut for Shape
This was my second session with this client. We did the coaching in the first session. Then she called me back for the haircut. So, I started with a dry curly cut. Why?
- I can see how the curls naturally fall
- I can remove bulk where it drags the hair down
- I can build shape that supports volume
Cutting this hair type wet often leads to a flat result. I mean, we wear our hair dry, right? Plus, you lose control over how the curls will sit once dry.
Step 2: Wash + Detangle (Only with Conditioner)
No dry brushing. If you follow just one guidance for curly haircare, it’s abolishing brushing your hair dry. Simply eradicate this step from your life and you will see how well your curls love the low maintenance.
- Detangle only when the hair is coated in conditioner or a bond repair mask
- Start from the ends, move upward.
- Use a brush to detangle curly hair.
This reduces:
- frizz
- breakage
- unnecessary tension on fine hair
Step 3: Styling with Treluxe Gel (The Right Way)
This is where most people go wrong.
Fine to medium curly hair needs precision, not more product. I see this in my clients all the time. You want results TODAY, and so, imagine using more product will help you get there. This kind of thinking is always counterproductive.
I used Treluxe Hi! Definition Gel on soaking wet hair.
Key points to remember:
- I used a small amount of this gel
- I did not overload the hair
- I focused on even distribution
Why this matters:

Step 4: Sectioning + Brush Styling
I worked in small sections. This helps you distribute the products evenly. My clients tell me then have frizz, curls open up the next day. The problem is because they do not section their hair, there is not enough product going around for everybody.
My client wanted more volume, along with defined curls. So I used this styling brush. Also, not random brushing. You will see in the video, I brushed in the direction of her hair growth.
This is what creates:

Then I added a tiny bit of gel to each section.

Step 5: Scrunch + Flip
After styling:

- Flipped her head forward
This helps:
- activate the curl pattern
- build root volume
- avoid a flat top
Step 6: Diffusing Without Disturbing the Hair
I used a diffusing cap to dry faster.
Important:
- minimal touching while drying
- no constant movement
Why? If you keep touching the hair:
- you break the cast too early
- you create frizz
- you lose definition
Let the curls set first.
