My go-to dinner whenever I am feeling a little lazy, don’t have many groceries on hand, or don’t know what to make will always be some sort of pasta dish. It’s easy to put together a delicious pasta dish with whatever is in my kitchen — even if it is just a bowl of buttered angel hair noodles.
When I first started cooking on my own in college, I picked up this little trick to always keep Trader Joe’s pasta sauce, fully cooked sausage, and ravioli on hand for nights that I just couldn’t be bothered. I’ll play around with ingredients — swapping tortellini for ravioli and a creamy sauce for marinara — but the basic formula has stuck with me through the years. Now I’m sorta “famous” for it among friends. Here’s how to make it.
How to Make My 3-Ingredient Trader Joe’s Dinner
Start by slicing your fully cooked sausage into coins and sear it in a saucepan. (Even though it’s cooked, I like to get a little color on it.) Once it browns, turn down the heat and add your desired pasta sauce. This week I went with a jar of creamy Alfredo sauce. I usually doctor up the sauce with pantry staples like salt, pepper, garlic powder, and oregano to make it taste more homemade.
To a pot of boiling water, add your ravioli and cook according to package instructions. It’s normally only a few minutes, unlike other noodles, so make sure not to overcook them. Skip the colander and add the ravioli directly to the saucepan with a slotted spoon, so a little pasta water is added as well. Then, gently toss the pasta in the sauce until everything is coated. That’s it!
What Makes This 3-Ingredient Trader Joe’s Dinner So Good
I’ve been making this dinner combination on repeat for years because it’s easy, delicious, and versatile. I shop almost exclusively at Trader Joe’s, and I never get bored of this three-ingredient formula because there are always so many fun new products to try. When I was making this dinner this week, I opted for my go-to roasted garlic chicken sausage, but I also love the spicy jalapeño and spicy Italian chicken sausage.
Trader Joe’s also has so many ravioli and tortellini variations, which I prefer over a noodle because they’re heartier and more flavorful. This week I went with the spinach tortellini to sneak in some vegetables, but I also love the porcini mushroom & truffle ravioli and cacio e pepe ravioli.
My favorite Trader Joe’s pasta sauces are actually the vodka sauce and Rosatella, but I was craving a creamy Alfredo this week. Feel free to play around and switch things up based on what you want. The process will always stay the same (super quick and easy).
From start to finish, dinner is ready in 15 minutes (counting the time it takes for the pasta water to boil). And if you’re cooking for one, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for the rest of the week as well.
