Valve already lost me on the Steam Machine, and now I don’t even know who it’s actually for

Valve is known for a lot of masterstrokes in the PC gaming space. With its unrivaled storefront, iconic game franchises, SteamOS, the Steam Deck, and even the company culture, Valve is a bit of a unicorn. The upcoming Steam Machine is set to join the Steam Deck and Steam Controller in Valve’s gaming hardware lineup. While Valve’s past performance, both in hardware and software, has been impeccable, there’s also the original „Steam Machines“ blot on its report card. The new Steam Machine is a curious device, marketed not as a console but as a PC running SteamOS and powering 4K 60 FPS gaming. Its underpowered internals were already cause for alarm, but even if you assume Valve will nail the optimization, the target consumer for the Steam Machine is a bit up in the air. We know that Valve has confirmed a 2026 launch, but with worse pricing than that of consoles and hardware that can’t rival budget PCs, who is the Steam Machine really for?

The best thing about this device is what comes after it

The Steam Machine was always an overpriced entry-level PC

Valve isn’t marketing an affordable console

When Valve finally confirmed rumors of an upcoming PC powered by SteamOS, everyone took notice. Valve’s attempt to increase SteamOS adoption and bring it into the living room was worthy of attention. While Valve fans decided then and there to buy the Steam Machine no matter what, the PC gamer crowd was more skeptical. We know the redesigned Steam Machine will pack a semi-custom, 6-core/12-thread, AMD Zen 4 CPU and a semi-custom RDNA 3 GPU with a 110W TDP and 8GB of VRAM. These specs are underwhelming when you realize that this is basically a PC running a Ryzen 5 7600 and an RX 7600. Combined with 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 512GB/2TB of NVMe storage, this configuration doesn’t instill much confidence in the Steam Machine’s technical prowess.

Valve even said that it will price the Steam Machine like a PC, not a console. So, don’t expect the company to sell the hardware at a loss and make up the difference later with subscriptions. The launch price, which is still a mystery, was never going to be in the $500–$700 range, and with hardware prices in the stratosphere, the actual price might be closer to the $1,000 mark. Valve was planning to launch the Steam Machine in early 2026, but the AI-induced hardware crisis forced a delay, and will certainly dilute the value proposition when the device finally arrives.

While „semi-custom“ doesn’t mean AMD produced new silicon for Valve, the tight integration between the hardware and the no-frills SteamOS environment could mean the Steam Machine punches above its weight. Still, there are limits to what FSR can achieve, even with its latest capabilities. The Steam Deck’s humble hardware didn’t stop it from dominating the handheld market because it was mostly a blue ocean — an untapped space with little competition. The Steam Machine, on the other hand, isn’t entering an uncontested market. Gamers already have more than a few options in the $500–$1000 price range, making the road ahead for the Steam Machine far from easy.

The Steam Machine may be the biggest hardware con in 2026

It wants to be in your living room, but it can’t explain why

The delayed launch could put a huge dent in Valve’s plans

The wait could prove too much for some gamers

The underwhelming hardware of the Steam Machine isn’t the only red flag here. The unavoidable delay in the launch could pave the way for alternatives to step in and capture its intended market. Enthusiasts are already going the DIY route by creating their own versions of the Steam Machine. They’re installing Bazzite, SteamOS, or some other Linux distro on desktops and mini PCs to create cheaper and arguably more powerful machines, no pun intended. If you don’t want to do it yourself, companies like Playnix are selling pre-built Steam Machine competitors, such as the Playnix console that starts at $1,179 for a 6-core Ryzen CPU, RX 9060 XT 16GB, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD.

You could always build a PC with a Ryzen 5 7600, RX 9060 XT 16GB, 16GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB Gen4 NVMe SSD, and the rest of the components for around $1,200, even at inflated prices. Granted, this will probably be around $200 more than Valve’s Steam Machine, but it will be significantly more powerful, and you could upgrade every single component in the future. The devoted section of gamers waiting for the Steam Machine will wait a bit longer, but even they would think twice before spending a premium on an inferior device. The delay could prematurely tap into the need in the market that Valve was planning to fulfill. Sure, the Steam Machine will look and work differently than whatever alternative people can come up with, but it could be too little, too late.

By the time the Steam Machine ships, it will have already lost the market it was supposed to own

The Steam Machine is poised to launch as the right device at the worst time

Who is the ideal buyer for the Steam Machine?

Presumably, no one

Let’s first look at who is not the target for the Steam Machine. It’s not for console gamers who are already invested in the Sony or Microsoft platform. They aren’t going to switch to PC gaming by buying a more expensive device; they’re content to play GTA VI before PC players when the game comes out later this year. The Steam Machine isn’t for PC gamers either, not exactly. Most people playing on PC already have comparable or better hardware than that of the Steam Machine — the RX 7600 falls somewhere between the RTX 3060 and RTX 4060, which are the two most used GPUs, according to the Steam Hardware Survey.

Valve is conceivably trying to carve out a new market out of the existing PC gaming audience, one that would buy the Steam Machine as an additional device for couch gaming or to replace an aging PC. The problem with that is that the Steam Machine, despite being a compact PC, isn’t really upgradable where it really matters. You can’t change the CPU or GPU when it inevitably starts to come up short in future titles. It’s like consoles in this regard, but then again, it has no exclusives like consoles do. And it can’t even play some of the most popular games due to the lack of kernel-level anti-cheat support. This makes titles like Battlefield 6, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, League of Legends, and Valorant incompatible with the Steam Machine.

Everything depends on the price, and that’s something that might be out of Valve’s control right now. The PC hardware market is unpredictable and shows no signs of a turnaround anytime soon. The Steam Machine is coming this year, so it is bound to launch at a much higher price than what Valve initially planned. I don’t see millions of gamers flocking to the Steam Machine as they did to the Steam Deck. The identity crisis is just too stark with Valve’s new PC-console hybrid. The silver lining, however, is that even if the Steam Machine fails, it will take a huge step forward for Linux gaming and whatever Valve follows it up with. It will create enough noise and capture enough market share to force the industry to take it seriously, creating more competitors and furthering Valve’s SteamOS ambitions.

Linux is finally ready for gamers, but gamers are still not ready for Linux

We’re in a golden age of Linux gaming, but most people are not ready to switch

My heart wants the Steam Machine to succeed, but my mind says otherwise

Valve probably knows what it’s doing. After all, the company has more hits than misses in its history. Still, the Steam Machine has one too many downsides for me to be sure about its success. It seems to want to be a PC and a console at the same time, but it might fail at being either. Keeping the pricing right is mostly out of Valve’s hands, and many gamers won’t wait for the delayed launch before buying something else to scratch their Linux gaming itch.
