How to Set Goals, Roles and Boundaries in Business With Your Partner

Couples in business often struggle with blurred lines between work and personal life, lacking clear roles, decision-making processes, and boundaries. Business coaches Jo and Lyndon, a husband-and-wife team, share their hard-won strategies.

They advocate dividing roles by ownership of categories (e.g., marketing, systems) rather than tasks. For goal setting, new ideas must align with the „3 Ps“: Passion, Profit, and Purpose, with something removed if something new is added. Shared goals should be made visual for daily alignment. Crucially, clear boundaries are essential, like specific times when work talk is off-limits and an end-of-day ritual (e.g., a walk) to signal the workday’s close. Maintaining personal interests outside work also strengthens the partnership.

Most couples who go into business with their partner figure it out as they go. Nobody warns them that their relationship catch-ups are about to become work meetings.

The lines blur fast. The business conversations never stop. And figuring out who owns what, how to make decisions together, and when work actually ends are things most couples in business together just stumble through.

Jo and Lyndon have been there. They’re husband-and-wife business coaches for creative entrepreneurs and the founders of The Breakroom, and it took a breakdown, a whiteboard, and five years of trial and error to build something that actually works.

Listen to the episode:

In this episode of Life Goals in Progress, they got real about all of it — how they set goals together, how they divided roles, and the boundaries that keep their relationship intact when you literally never leave each other. Here’s what they shared.

1. How to Divide Roles in Your Business

About six to eight months into working together, Jo hit a wall. Burnt out, maxed out, and fully convinced she just needed to push harder because that’s how her brain works. Lyndon went for a walk, came back, and went straight to the whiteboard.

“He comes over to me and says: okay, this is what we’re gonna do. From here on out, this is your zone over here and this is mine. I’m gonna take care of all of these things that you’re stressed out about. And all you have to do is over here.”

For anyone who is an eldest daughter, a perfectionist, or just fiercely independent, Jo said it best. When someone tells you what to do and you feel safe about it, that is one of the best gifts you could ever receive.

But here’s the part that actually made it stick. Before the whiteboard, Lyndon was doing tasks for Jo’s business.

After it, he owned entire categories of decisions. One owned marketing. One owned systems. No overlap or second-guessing each other’s lanes anymore. The list has evolved a hundred times since then, but that shift from tasks to ownership is what changed everything about how they divide roles in the business.

2. The 3 Ps: A Goal Setting Framework for Couples in Business

Jo and Lyndon try a lot of things. A lot. But not every idea makes it past the pitch stage, and that is very much on purpose.

“If we can be crystal clear on what our long-term goals are, there is a framework of: passion is super important, profit is also important, and purpose is important. How do we think about whether this pivot is getting us closer to one of those three Ps?”

Before anything new gets a yes, it has to earn it. One person pitches the idea, the other stress-tests it against their shared goals.

And they have a rule straight out of Marie Kondo: if something gets added, something else has to come off. It keeps the business focused and stops both of them from chasing every exciting idea that comes up mid road trip.

The Breakroom is actually a perfect example of this in action. It started as coffee chats, turned into free Friday calls, and slowly became a paid membership. They tested every version of it before committing. And now it is the first thing in their business that Jo says she has felt truly excited about long term, not just for a few months.

3. How Couples in Business Can Stay Aligned All Year

Jo and Lyndon do not just set and forget their goals. They make sure to put them somewhere they both see every single day.

Right now there is a mountain graphic hanging on their office wall with 180 slots to fill in, one for every client they work with in 2026. The number came from a simple question: they worked with 18 clients in 2025, so what if they just 10x’d it?

Inspired by the book 10x Is Easier Than 2x by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy, the idea is that a goal big enough forces you to actually think about what it takes to get there.

“Part of it is gamifying it, making it fun. But more importantly, we care so deeply about having an impact on creative business owners. And this is a way to include our community in the process.”

People see the mountain on their calls and ask about it. Which means Jo and Lyndon are top of mind when someone in that person’s world needs a business coach. The goal setting does the marketing for them.

4. How to Set Boundaries With Your Business Partner When You Also Live Together

This one is simpler than you would think, and also the thing that took them the longest to actually do.

“Can you have a work conversation right now? Not just launching into it. If the answer is no, it gets written down. And there is just respect for that.”

When working with your spouse means you share both a home and a business, work conversations bleed into everything.

Jo cannot talk about work until she has had her morning routine, and after dinner is off limits. Lyndon said it took both of them a while to get there. But now it is just how they operate.

Lyndon also made a point that really landed — what used to be casual catch-up time, venting about coworkers, talking about your day, becomes a work conversation the second you are running the same business. You have to actually rebuild what connection looks like outside of that. Which takes more intention than you would expect.

5. An End of Day Ritual: The Boundary Every Couple in Business Needs

Without a commute, the workday has no natural ending. Jo and Lyndon solved this by creating their own.

“We try to go for a walk at the end of the day. That is our wind down ritual. You get home, you have dinner, and now you are in your personal life and not your work life.”

The ritual does not have to be a walk. It just has to be something consistent that signals the shift.

Jo also shared something that stuck: in seasons where she struggled to connect with Lyndon personally, it was almost always because she had stopped doing things outside of work. No workouts, no friends, no hobbies. Nothing to bring back to the relationship. The personal stuff feeds the partnership just as much as any boundary does.

Put It Into Practice

Okay, your turn! Going into business with your partner is one of the most exciting and most complicated things you can do. Here is where to start:

  • Grab a piece of paper and write down every decision your business requires this month. Split them into two columns, one per person. Figure out who has the final call on what.
  • Before your next new idea gets a yes, run it through the 3 Ps. Which one does it serve? What comes off the plate to make room for it?
  • Pick one shared goal, make it visual, and put it somewhere you both see it every day.
  • Decide on two times a day that are off limits for work talk. And actually stick to it.
  • Figure out what your end of day ritual looks like together. Anything that tells your brain the workday is done.
