The Gay Bar Is Fine, Actually

Despite a perceived societal shift away from LGBTQ+ acceptance and reduced corporate Pride support, the author finds that gay bars are surprisingly thriving. An informal „vibe check“ revealed optimism, with new establishments opening and existing ones bustling in cities like NYC, D.C., Denver, and Houston.

Historically, gay bars, similar to 18th-century „molly houses,“ offer a vital, „slightly dangerous“ space for authentic self-expression and connection, beyond mere safety. While the gay community often complains about its bars, this doesn’t diminish their enduring appeal or necessity. The article concludes that gay bars remain a resilient cultural cornerstone, providing stiff drinks and community amidst an uncertain world.

The banks aren’t tossing out rainbow pens from a float this year. This is how I typically restock my annual supply, so I’m forced to write this on a laptop. In 2015, the White House was lit up in rainbow colors. Now, a massive UFC arena—the spiritual opposite of a gay light display—has been erected on the lawn. No one drinks or has sex anymore. Support for same-sex marriage has fallen for the first time in decades. 2026 ought to be a horrendous time for the beleaguered institution of the local gay bar. But if you ask me, there’s never been a better time to enjoy a whiskey Coke poured by a bear into a plastic cup at a 5:1 whiskey-to-Coke ratio.

Throughout my long and prodigious career as a homosexual, gays have been complaining about their own bars. Complaining is a great gay artform. During the peak “corporate Pride” years, when Chipotle sold “Homo Estás” shirts, we complained it was pandering; when the sponsors fled after Trump’s reelection, we complained about that, too. Gay bars, we say, are too crowded, too expensive, too exclusionary. The music sucks. The service is awful. The only good bar in this town closed years ago. Do you remember Tic-Tac? It was perfect. It was too good for this wretched world. RIP. And so on. So when I went asking around for an informal vibe check on gay bars in our gloomy present, I expected the worst. The sentiment was positively sunny.

Why were so many gays expressing optimism. Were they sick?

“How’s the gay bar scene here?” I asked a friend while sitting at Trade in Washington, D.C.

“Honestly, great,” he said in an even, earnest tone. “They’re opening new ones,” he went on, despite the face I was making at him.

It was true in New York as well, where bars like Animal regularly see lines wrapped around the block. New York and D.C. are hardly representative of the collective, but I’d recently had the chance, for work, to travel to Denver, Minneapolis, and Houston, and found the gay bar scenes there more vivid than ever.

Vibes Shift, but the Gay Bar Endures

The dimmer the world, the brighter the bar. We trade the danger outside for a danger of our own.

If you’ll allow a Queer Elder to wax poetic: despite alcohol allegedly being in its flop era, the gay bar has always been something apart. Like wine at Catholic mass, alcohol has an organizing power over it, but the true occasion is metaphysical. The best ones I’ve patronized have been, colloquially speaking, a hole: shabby little dinghies where you can hear the ferocious waves slapping at the sides.

Why the bar? Stonewall is the most obvious example, but the bar remains a vital organ, the health of which is a perennial matter of urgency. Are we letting too many straight people in? Should we start playing porn to keep them out? Or would that be biphobic? Misogynistic? Transphobic? I’ve attended many such symposiums while sipping nail polish remover. I can’t think of another community outside of swingers where the bar has such central importance.

At the gay bar I enter a different self: more mischievous, more open to appetite and suggestion, more liable to leave knowing someone I didn’t know before.

Before even the word “gay,” there was “molly.” And before gay bars, there was something like them: the molly houses of 18th-century London. These were taverns, or coffeehouses, or any place where men could gather to drink and parody the straight world with, for example, mock weddings. The threat of arrest, and even death, hung over these places. It lent them their edge.

A lot has changed since then. Gay bars are more likely these days to be called “a safe space where you can be your authentic self.” But, in keeping with its molly house roots, I find the gay bar to be something better than that. It’s a slightly dangerous space, where something honest and hungry comes out to play, and to eat. At the gay bar I enter a different self: more mischievous, more open to appetite and suggestion, more liable to leave knowing someone I didn’t know before. There’s a Dionysian aspect. Inebriation leads to revelation. Without danger, there’s no change. Without danger, there’d be no gay bar in the first place.

Change comes slowly or all at once. Tides shift, popularity waxes and wanes, and through it all the drinks have stayed stiff and we have kept complaining. What the future holds for the gay bar, like everything else in our world, is uncertain. Some, like the lesbian bar Henrietta Hudson which rebranded as a “lesbian-centric queer human bar,” have embraced the idea of becoming a “space.” Others, like the beloved Avenue Pub in Rochester did last year, are shuttering. Pride itself is in a precarious place. In the absence of corporate support, the traditional “Pride Is a Riot!” clarion call, too, feels as though it’s lacking its typical annual oomph. There’s a Girl, whatever, hanging like a pall. A sleepy Pride. A languid Pride. A great time to skip the party and hit the bar. Bartender, pour me a vodka cran!

The dimmer the world, the brighter the bar. We trade the danger outside for a danger of our own.

No spoilers, but the tides will change again. Even now, Target has been successfully bullied into an anemic Pride merch collection this year, which includes among its wares a baffling trinket of two felt heterosexual birds driving a car, though one ought not, I suppose, deny the possibility of the birds being bisexual, or transgender. The point is, presidents and vibe shifts come and go. Stiff drinks and gay men complaining are forever.

“Can we leave before the show starts?” my friend said, sitting across from me at Trade. “I know this queen. She’s not who she thinks she is.”

Ah, it feels good to be home.
