Maria Sharapova advanced to the Wimbledon third round after defeating British wildcard Laura Robson. The Russian former champion won 7-6, 6-3 on Number One court. However, 17-year-old Robson, ranked 254, delighted the home crowd by roaring into a surprising 4-1 lead in the first set. Fifth seed Sharapova, initially tetchy, fought back impressively to force and win the first set tiebreak 7-4. She then closed out the match in the second set, overcoming the partisan atmosphere and Robson’s spirited challenge.
