Maria Sharapova advanced to the second round at Wimbledon, defeating fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-2, 6-1 on Tuesday. The sixth-seeded Sharapova dominated the No. 52-ranked Chakvetadze in just over an hour. While Chakvetadze managed a single break, she was largely outclassed. Sharapova, a 2004 Wimbledon champion, seeks to progress further in the tournament, having not gone beyond the fourth round since 2006. She is one of the few former champions in the women’s draw, alongside Venus and Serena Williams.
